“Jesus as a Suicide Bomber”

By Fred George

A political and humanitarian photographic statement to

the American Christian Right and the Radical Muslims  that

use the power of their religions to disrupt the possibility of

” Peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men.”

The Jesus series

Well before the destruction of the towers of the World Trade Center, he created one of his monumental photo works: “Jesus as a Suicide Bomber”. Tiled photo mosaic images of Jesus, with a looped bomb belt on his torso, stretched out on the cross with Maria Magdalene, a child and a Lady in Waiting at his side. George stylized the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross as a suicide program, putting the operations of young American soldiers on their unspecified mission in foreign countries on the same level as Muslim suicidal terrorist attacks. This shocking comparison produced media outcries and even illusionary media riots at his exhibition in Houston and Berlin, Germany in 2006

Behind the scenes…

In the year 2000, in honor of his artistic merit, Fred George was awarded the privilege of the use of the Polaroid 20 x 24 camera in New York City donated by the Polaroid Corporation.

Seizing upon this great honor, George was interested in creating a powerful, historical and lasting image. Deeply moved by current political upheavals, particularly with the Bush administration’s rhetoric of American Godliness, he produced imagery that would bring light to the conflict of the American Christian Right, Israel, and the Moslem Atilt.

The highly controversial photo series, ” Jesus as a Suicide Bomber”, was created with this Polaroid camera prior to 9/11. George experienced a "spiritual zeitgeist" and was compelled to address the ways in which political regimes manipulate religious iconography as tools of propaganda, glorifying martyrdom on a global scale at the expense of a great loss of life and individual freedom.

The Camera produces 20 x 24 inch (51 x 61 cm) original prints that were scanned at extremely high resolution. The core image of this series is the four-meter digital photomural, ” Jesus as a Suicide Bomber”, printed by Duggal Color Labs in New York City.

Extending the bridge of his artistic expression, George produced four additional images from the series, printed on ceramic tiles from Italy. The images were installed as photo mosaics, relating to the extensive use of mosaic tiles in the religious context in buildings of worship.

This elaborate photographic tiling process took place in Vienna, Austria; in collaboration with Mr. Ernest Mrskos and his son. They utilized an exact mathematical grid pattern that was overlaid on each individual tile. The tiles then undergo a computer imaging process and were then kiln-fired.
